Is “Over-Cooling” Your Transmission Fluid Really a Concern?
It’s a common question - but in most cases, over-cooling transmission fluid isn’t something to worry about. Exceptions can occur in specific situations, such as with snow plow vehicles. In these cases, snow and ice can build up on the cooler, significantly reducing airflow. Fortunately, most modern transmissions feature an integrated bypass system that restricts fluid flow to the cooler in extremely cold conditions. For added protection in these environments, a Hayden by-pass cooler is an ideal solution.
Many modern vehicles are now equipped with CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) systems that rely on liquid-to-liquid cooling. While effective at warming up transmission fluid during cold starts, these systems fall short when ambient temperatures rise or the vehicle is under load. Since coolant typically operates between 100°C and 105°C, it’s not efficient at cooling already-heated transmission fluid - especially during long drives, towing, or road trips. This heat buildup, or "heat soak," can eventually force the vehicle into limp mode to prevent damage.
Installing a by-pass cooler in-line with the existing system helps lower transmission temperatures, protect performance, and significantly extend the life of your transmission
