Cause:
Wear at the plunger/sleeve assembly results in the converter remaining applied and transferring shift shock. Loss of lube pressure and control timing also results in RPM fluctuation.

Correction:

Listed Toyota/Lexus transmissions can have complaints associated with a worn plunger valve and sleeve which includes harsh 2-3 and harsh coast downshifts. This is due to the converter clutch remaining applied. When the plunger valve and sleeve wear, this can delay TCC apply, the vehicle RPM may surge or set gear ratio codes due to high slip rates.
